GAY SCHOENEBERG
Back in the roaring 1920s the area around Nollendorfplatz became the centre
of a lively gay scene with the original Berlin cabarets, bars and theatres.
Christopher Isherwood mixed here with other queer intellectuals and together
they proclaimed the "third sex". Today, these traditions are reborn.
The "Kiez" has again become the gay epicenter of Berlin, if not of Europe.
Great stores (RoB, Mr B, Butcherei Lindinger, Gear etc.), Bars (Mutschmann's,
Scheune, New Action) and restaurants (More, Gnadenbrot) make for a gay fetish
fantasyland. Everybody is out in Schoeneberg, even Berlin's openly gay mayor.
